What are the Research Starters in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and how do I find them?

Answer

Research Starters are useful introductions to a topic. They are usually encyclopedia articles from Salem Press and H.W. Wilson reference books. They are regularly revised and updated so that they provide up-to-date information.

Research Starters are included in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) results. EDS is the big search bar on the University Libraries homepage.

For some searches, a Research Starter will be recommended in the featured results right at the top of your results list:

The Research Starter "Public transportation" located in the Featured Results for an EDS search for "public transportation."

If you do not see a Research Starter at the top of your results, or you want to see if there are more options, you can use the "Source type" filter below the search bar. Click "Source type," check "Research Starters" in the drop-down menu, and then click "Apply." You might have to click "more" to see all the checkbox options.
