The University Libraries are committed to a successful outcome for every student, and we know that the cost of college textbooks is high. We often receive ILL requests for textbooks, and we always try our best to get what you need.
We suggest that you review the content of the textbook you need and consider submitting a book chapter request instead of a request for a loan. Feel free to place an ILL request for a textbook; however, there are many reasons why it's hard to obtain a textbook through ILL:
- Very few libraries purchase textbooks and even fewer have the most current editions.
- For libraries that do purchase textbooks, the textbooks are often reserved for their campus use only. Even if we can find a lender, it takes time for the textbook to arrive and there is a possibility that you will be behind in your coursework.
- Loan due dates via ILL are set by the lending library. Loaned textbooks have shorter checkout periods, and no renewals are granted.
- Items requested via ILL are subject to immediate recall if their patron put a hold.
- Failure to return items when due or recalled leads to lost charges to your account and suspended ILL privileges not only for you. The lending library can choose to suspend any ILL requests from UofM.
- Some textbooks and course packs are only used at the University of Memphis and available through the bookstore.
If you are an instructor:
- consider working with librarians to incorporate library and OER resources into your coursework.
- offer course readings or textbooks on physical or electronic Reserves.
